Vulnerability In Different Lightings

Vulnerability is an emotional state of losing one’s sense of security. While a space is made up of different components, eg. materiality, climate, etc, I think the intensity of lighting in a space plays an important role in one’s experience in a space.

A vulnerable space is where people feel like they cannot detect the potential threats in one’s surroundings due to insufficient light. From the images below, we can see that although the materiality of the structure is the same, the sense of security varies, just by adjusting the exposure of light.

This is a common experience in outdoor spaces during the day and night, more people feel safer to go outside in daylight.
